Volunteering for Halloween

If you’re very excited of the perspective of Halloween you probably find that time is very long. In that case you should just try to do some activities with a full schedule and avoid being bored. What can be more fun than to wait for Halloween by participating in a Halloween Festival ? The Dragon of Shandon Parade is a festival that occurs every year in Cork, expanding as more volunteers participate in this project each time.

The Cork Community Art Link is developing this project and asks for more volunteers to help to make costumes, masks, the Dragon itself and to participate in the Parade this 31st of october. No experience is required, there will be professionals to teach you how to create the costumes and the masks, you will also be able to help to create giant puppets or to take part in street performance on the day of the parade, the only thing you need is motivation. You will go to IAWS building in Albert Quay to join the other volunteers and make this event a really good one.

Join the Dragon of Shandon Parade by calling the Cork Volunteer Centre on 021 425 1572 and be a part of this morbid (yet funny) festival.

Why you should experience life as a Hospitality Intern in the Sunshine State.

Florida welcomed an estimated 29.8 million tourist in January through March of 2016. Tourism and hospitality are a lifeblood industry in Southwest Florida and there are all sorts of positions to be filled every year.  Bartenders, servers, hosts, chefs, front desk housekeeping, the list is endless!

When I arrived in Miami I began job hunting online straight away, with its buzzing night life, beaches lined with luxury hotels and rentals, and restaurants there was no shortage of employment in the city.  A relative of mine living in the area happened to know a guy, who knew a guy, that owned a bar not too far from where I was living in Miami shores and  I jumped at the opportunity and took the position of bartender and server . (They use the word server rather than waiter/waitress)

A first the locals struggled to understand my Irish accent and I also had to work hard to understand what they were saying, ordering or even what they meant; a Cubano, Conch Fritters , Civiche, huh?? I soon became familiar with all these delicious American dishes (if anything a bit too familiar), and although sometimes Americans found my accent difficult, the minute they worked out I was Irish they were fascinated! Been Irish in America is your lucky charm.  Almost every American I came across seemed to be spell bound by our little green isle and had an aunt, grandfather, ancestor, cat or dog from somewhere in the country and to be sure some will ask you about the leprechauns! Although we take our country for granted at times, going abroad makes you realise how lucky we are.

Working in the hospitality industry, you will have opportunities to meet many people and make many friends both colleagues and customers.  Been a newbie in town, I was made feel so welcome and many locals offered to take me out and show me around.  When in Rome, do as the Romans do! Step outside your comfort zone and get friendly with some locals.  They know their city better than anyone else and they will show you the best places to eat shop, see and enjoy. One of my favourite memories was hopping on the back of my local friend’s scooter and touring the city.  The warm breeze, sunshine beaming down, streets lined with palm trees, old art deco building, people whizzing by on rollerblades, life was pretty sweet and  Miami was exactly like how it was in the movies and left me mesmerized.

Another great thing about working in the hospitality industry in Florida is that you are in Florida! With a warm, sunny climate all year round, days off have never looked so good. Arts, culture, adventure activities, beaches, Florida has it all covered.  You will never run of entertainment.  With so much to do, you’ll be glad to have your job to fund your social life.
Although you may be a little surprised to see the minimum wage is lower than what we receive here in Ireland, it’s all about your tips in the US.  You could live off your tips alone and you never have to worry about surviving from pay cheque to pay cheque.  If you r a good worker and are polite and friendly your guaranteed to go home with money in your back pocket every night

If living in Florida, is not on your bucket list already, than it certainly needs to be.

Adam Karlin, Lonely Planet, Travel Writer says,

“We come to Florida to let go – of worries and winter, of inhibitions and reality. Some desire a beachy getaway of swimming, seafood and sunsets. Others seek the hedonism of South Beach, spring break and Key West. Still more hope to lose themselves within the magical realms of Walt Disney World and Orlando's theme parks”

What will your work abroad experience in Florida be for you? There’s only one way to find out

Aoife O'Neill
